Retail PoS System
A tablet-based point of sale system for a major UK hardware retailer.

The Challenge
A major UK hardware retailer needed a modern point of sale system for their trade counters. The existing system was slow, required extensive staff training, and couldn't keep up with peak-hour traffic.
The goal: a tablet-first PoS that staff could learn in minutes, not days — while handling complex workflows like click-and-collect, trade accounts, and inventory lookup.

My Role
As Design Engineer, I bridged design and development:
Component Architecture — Designed and built a modular component library in React + Tailwind CSS Design System — Established tokens, patterns, and documentation for consistent UI UI Development — Implemented production-ready interfaces from design specs Storybook — Built interactive component documentation for the team Design-Dev Process — Established workflows between designers and engineers
Design Deep Dive
Browse & Search
Optimized for speed — staff can search by product name, SKU, or barcode scan. Results update instantly, with stock levels and aisle location visible at a glance.
Category filters let trade counter staff navigate a catalogue of 4,000+ products without losing their place.
Product Detail
Full product view shows specs, stock quantity, and shelf location. Staff can adjust quantity and add directly to the current sale without leaving context.
Breadcrumb navigation keeps orientation clear across deep product hierarchies.
Current Sale
Live cart with editable quantities and a condensed payment panel on the right. VAT is calculated and shown inline — no surprises at the terminal.
Three payment methods accessible in one tap: card, cash, or trade account.
Card Payment
Minimal payment screen surfaces the total prominently and communicates terminal status in plain language. Staff don't need to watch the card machine — the screen mirrors its state.
Manual entry and alternate payment methods are one tap away if the terminal has issues.
Sale Complete
Confirmation screen with full receipt breakdown. Staff can print or email without navigating away — then start the next sale with a single tap.
Transaction number and timestamp are always visible for dispute resolution.
Returns Flow
Receipt lookup surfaces the original order instantly. Staff can select individual line items for partial returns — useful for trade customers returning part of a bulk order.
Refund eligibility is checked in real time against the return policy window.

Component Philosophy
The component library was built around retail-specific patterns:
Speed-first — Large touch targets, minimal navigation depth, keyboard shortcuts for power users Error-resistant — Clear feedback, confirmation dialogs for destructive actions, easy undo Scannable — High contrast, consistent hierarchy, status colors that work in bright store lighting Composable — Small, focused components that combine into complex workflows
Outcome
The system shipped to pilot stores and expanded across the retail network.
What I delivered: • 40+ production-ready React components • Complete design token system (colors, spacing, typography) • Storybook documentation with usage examples • Tablet-optimized layouts for browse, checkout, and account management • Component patterns adopted by the wider engineering team
What I learned: Retail UI has unique constraints — bright lighting, rushed interactions, gloved hands. Designing for these edge cases early saved significant rework later.
